A breathing art charms the breathing souls forever.
Living in the chaotic France in the late 19th century, creating art that reflects contemporary philosophy and literature of the time, expressing boundless personal perceptions and emotions, featuring realism and impressionism in his manner of creation, Auguste Rodin, the influential master in the development of 20th century sculpture, led the way to a new arena for modern sculpture. “The Gates of Hell vs. Love – Rodin Sculpture Exhibition” is presenting Auguste Rodin’s bronze works and precious manuscripts in the former Taichung City Hall. Among the 32 masterpieces of bronze works, a dozen are components in Rodin’s life-long creation The Gates of Hell, and the rest includes Monument to Balzac, which was erecting on a Parisian street; the most well known ones of The Thinker and The Kiss; and The Age of Bronze, which was once accused of surmoulage --- cast from a living human being. The 142 prints, making their debut in Taiwan, are his manuscripts, sketches or casual notes. They fully reveal the tracks of his brainstorming and art making. Complemented with art critique movies and a keynote speech by Dr. Jiang Hsung, this exhibition is educationally, recreationally, academically and artistically worth visiting. “The Gates of Hell vs. Love – Rodin Sculpture Exhibition” will not become such a success without the great efforts of the Modern Art Gallery and the kind sponsorship from all the enthusiastic businesses and organizations. I hereby express my sincerest gratitude to them, and my warmest invitation to the public to visit this art feast of Auguste Rodin.
