Glimpse into Rodin’s World
Art is the cream of human wisdom and passions. It is presented in the forms of music, dance, engraving, painting, drama and others. Through various media, art strikes a responsive chord in the hearts of its audiences. The sincerity and emotional feelings in creating art has certainly enriched our lives.
French Romantic sculpture master, Auguste Rodin holds a prestige position in the European sculpture history. It is similar to Dante in the history of European literature. Rodin is best in transforming thoughts, passion and beauty into actual objects. He once said “What makes my Thinker think is that he thinks not only with the brain, with his knitted brow, his distended nostrils, and compressed lips, but with every muscle of his arms, back, and legs, with his clenched fist and gripping toes.” What is also fascinating is Rodin’s romantic life. In his works, Rodin shares with us his view on love and romance. From his works, the Kiss and Aphrodite and Psyche, we get a glimpse into the sensible side of this famous artist.
2007 marks the 6th year into the Shining Taichung Arts Festival. Continued this year, we have again incorporated the much loved Jazz Music Festival and Colorful City Festival as parts of program. In addition, we have teamed up Modern Art Gallery, Taichung to win the permission from the Artco-France Foundation to organize this exhibition. 32 pieces of Rodin’s bronze sculptures, including the international renowned works, the Thinker, Monument to Balzac and the Age of Bronze, along with more than 100 pieces of Rodin’s prints will be on display in this one and only exhibition in Taiwan. Former Taichung Municipal Office, a carefully restored historic building, has been selected as the perfect location for the event. This Baroque style building complements Rodin’s sculptures. It is as if we are decorating Rodin’s residence in Taichung.
I am very grateful to have supports from many private enterprises in organizing this exhibition. Because of them, the cultural spirits of the city will deepen in the hearts of residents. My gratitude also goes to our energetic citizens. I encourage you to take part and support cultural activities and make Taichung the shining heartland of Taiwan. An invitation is extend to all citizens to come and witness the authentic work of Rodin. By getting a glimpse into Rodin’s creative world will surely enrich our lives.
