Fugit Amor

(Alma
This sculpture《Fugit
Amor》have
many names, such as《Dream》、《Night》、《Daybreak》、《Arrival》,
est.. However, The name《Fugit
Amor》is
the most famous name.
《Fugit
Amor》means
“gone love” which is one of the most attractive sculptures in《The
Gates of Hell》.
Rodin set two《Fugit
Amor》in《The
Gates of Hell》.
One set right under the door board. Another set right in the middle
of the door board.
Appearing for the first time in 1887, this group portrays the
frantic flight of a woman carrying her stiff and inanimate victim on
her back: a man. Is she a praying mantis? It is the damnation of
this woman, symbolized by an irreversible flight towards the abyss.
The woman’s limbs are supple and full of life. Those of the man are
rigid and appear to be dead. The combination of these limbs,
symbolizing both life and death, is truly impressive.
In 1900, the plaster which served as the model for this sculpture
was purchased by Dr Max Linde at the Alma Exhibition of Rodin’s
work. Dr Linde would gradually become the greatest private collector
of Rodin’s works.
