Head of Balzac

(Society of Men of LettersSociété des Gens de Lettres)

In 1891 Rodin received a commission by the Society of Men of Letters (“La Société des Gens de Lettres”) to create a monument to their founder, French writer Honoré de Balzac. Rodin worked on the Monument to Balzac for seven years. He completed at least fifty studies, some based on Balzac's actual appearance and others more subjective and abstract. Most of the studies were of Balzac's head, as Rodin felt it more important to emphasize the heads of people of such high intellect. He completed at least fifty studies, some based on Balzac's actual appearance and others more subjective and abstract. Most of the studies were of Balzac's head, as Rodin felt it more important to emphasize the heads of people of such high intellect. In this version, Balzac's exaggerated features reveal distinct expressions when viewed from varying conditions of light and perspective.

This bronze head of Honoré de Balzac seems to portray the satirical view he had of society. Balzac was a French author obsessed with writing and food. Balzac failures never faltered his drive to continue to write novels and novelettes. Balzac real success came after his death. French author Balzac was one of the creators of realism in literature, with a bent for satire.
