Age of Bronze

1875
年羅丹開始為巴黎藝術沙龍而準備與實物大小相同的男人裸體塑像。
《青銅時代》,以青年人在朦朧中逐漸甦醒,象徵文明時代的開始為意旨。這作品的模特兒是一個年僅二十歲的比利時士兵,名叫奧古斯特‧涅特(Auguste
Neyt)。在羅丹眼中,非常喜歡他所擺出的那不符常規且不太學術的自然體態。
羅丹的第一件傑作,《青銅時代》於1876年完成,這裸體,雖是傳統題材但卻以自然形式塑造出來,沒有希臘和羅馬雕塑那種誇大的肌肉組織。1877年在布魯塞爾展出時,即被懷疑它的真實。
然而回到巴黎後,1877年羅丹將作品交給巴黎藝術沙龍,評論家亦對他精準的人體構造產生懷疑,人們指責《青銅時代》不是一件雕塑,而是直接用模特兒本人的身體翻模而成的,甚至是由屍體鑄造。雖然它的形體而得到讚揚,但仍因同樣的疑慮而遭拒絕。整整三年,羅丹遭受到毀謗,多虧了新任文化部長杜爾戈(M.
Turquet),《青銅時代》才獲得平反。得以在巴黎藝術家沙龍展(The
Salon des Artistes)展出。1880年,巴黎市購買了一件石膏以及銅雕作品。
《青銅時代》贏得根特(Ghent)金獎。羅丹直到四十歲才過著金錢無慮的生活。因為《青銅時代》,羅丹開始出名。許多來自巴黎的邀請和訪客,可以證明所言不假。巴黎市並在著名的大理石工作室(Dépôt
des Marbres),大學路(Rue
de L’Université)182號提供他一間工作室創作。
In
1875, Rodin began work on a large-scale statue intended for
submission to the Paris Salon. Rodin used as his model a young
Belgian soldier, Auguste Neyt, just 22 years old, whose
unconventional nature made him preferable, in Rodin’s eyes.
The Age of Bronze, Rodin’s first masterpiece was completed in 1876,
and exhibited in Brussels in 1877. This nude was based on classical
tradition but was modeled naturalistically, without the exaggerated
musculature of Greek and Roman sculpture. Rodin first presented it
in Brussels, where critics were suspicious of his exquisite
rendering of the human form and accused him of casting it from life.
He returned to Paris but the rumors followed him as he submitted
the nude, titled The Age of Bronze, to the Paris Salon of 1877. It
was praised for its beauty, but Rodin was again forced to defend
himself against allegations of casting from a live model. Although
it was praised for its beauty, the work was rejected and Rodin was
forced to defend himself against the same accusations. For three
years, Rodin was vilified. It is because of the new Minister of
Culture, M. Turquet, The Age of Bronze was finally rehabilitated,
and was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in Paris. The plaster
cast and one bronze were bought by the City of Paris in 1880. Rodin
had fought for three years to prove that the accusation was unjust.
The Age of Bronze went on to win the Gold Medal at Ghent. At the
age of forty, Rodin was finally able to forty, Rodin was finally
able to put his money problems behind him. Life gathered pace for
this “man of bronze” who was beginning to become famous. Invitations
and visitors from Parisian society poured in. The City of Paris
provided him with a studio at the famous “Dépôt des Marbres”, 182
Rue de l’Université.
