Eve
According to the Bible, the Lord God created the first man, Adam.
Then he took a rib from Adam’s body and out of it created the first
woman. Eve. Likewise, although the date of the plaster Adam is known
from its exhibition in the Salon of 1881, the date of the life-size
Eve is far from certain. In 1881 Rodin announced his intention to
produce a companion for his Adam, and indeed 1881 has often been
cited as the date for Eve.
The gesture of Eve’s left arm seems to have been inspired by that of
Adam in the fresco of The Expulsion from Paradise on the Sistine
Chapel ceiling, and her body is related to that of Eve from the same
vignette. Her from has nothing in common with the shapes of
contemporary female nudes in the salon sculptures that enjoyed such
popularity in the last quarter of the nineteenth century; to the
contrary, the roughened surfaces in some of the passages in the
bronze give a toughness to the image.
